What is breast cancer surgery?

- Breast cancer surgery removes cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy breast tissue and aesthetic outcome as possible. The two main approaches are breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy or wide local excision) and mastectomy, often combined with reconstruction. Oncoplastic surgery combines cancer removal with reconstructive techniques in a single operation.

Recovery
Recovery varies by procedure. Breast-conserving surgery is often a day case with a return to light activity within one to two weeks. Mastectomy, particularly with reconstruction, requires a longer recovery of several weeks. Mr Ghosh and the specialist nursing team provide a written recovery plan and direct contact for any concerns.
Risks and considerations
As with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, seroma (fluid collection), scarring and changes in sensation. Lymph node surgery carries a risk of lymphoedema. Mr Ghosh discusses the specific risks relevant to your operation and how they are minimised, in line with NICE and Association of Breast Surgery guidance.

What is the difference between a lumpectomy and a mastectomy?
A lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery) removes the cancer with a margin of healthy tissue, keeping most of the breast. A mastectomy removes all of the breast tissue. The right choice depends on the size and type of cancer, your breast size, and your preferences.
Will I need reconstruction?
Reconstruction is a personal choice. As an oncoplastic surgeon, Mr Ghosh plans reconstructive options at the same time as cancer surgery where appropriate, so you can make an informed decision.
How soon can surgery happen?
For confirmed cancer, surgery is usually arranged promptly following multidisciplinary team (MDT) review, often within two to three weeks of diagnosis.
Is my case reviewed by a wider team?
Yes. Every cancer case is discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting that includes oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and specialist nurses, ensuring your plan reflects current best practice.
Can I get a second opinion?

Will I need chemotherapy or radiotherapy?
Surgery is one part of treatment. Whether you also need radiotherapy, chemotherapy or hormone therapy depends on the tumour. Your oncology team will discuss this with you.
