What is a one-stop breast clinic?
- Definition
- A one-stop breast clinic combines specialist consultation, imaging, and (where needed) biopsy in a single appointment. This is called triple assessment — the gold-standard pathway used by NHS Breast Units and recommended by the Association of Breast Surgery. It is designed to reach a working diagnosis quickly, reducing the anxious wait between tests.
Is this right for you?
The one-stop clinic is suitable if you have:
- A new breast lump or area of thickening
- Nipple discharge, especially if blood-stained or from one side
- Breast pain that warrants investigation
- A family history of breast or ovarian cancer
- A wish for private screening if you are a woman aged 40 or over

How to prepare
- Wear a two-piece outfit so you can undress to the waist comfortably.
- Bring any previous breast imaging or reports if you have them.
- Bring a list of your current medications.
- If using insurance, bring your authorisation code and membership number.
- No fasting is required.
Your results
Imaging is reviewed and explained by Mr Ghosh on the same day. If a biopsy is taken, the laboratory results usually take 3 to 5 working days. Mr Ghosh personally explains what the findings mean and what — if anything — needs to happen next, including onward referral to the multidisciplinary team where appropriate.
Risks and considerations
Mammography uses a low dose of X-ray radiation; the benefit of accurate diagnosis is considered to outweigh this small exposure for women aged 40 and over. A core-needle biopsy may cause minor bruising or discomfort. Occasionally imaging findings are uncertain and a short-interval follow-up scan is recommended.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed if you are paying for yourself. If you are using private medical insurance, most insurers require a GP referral letter first — we can guide you through this.
How long does the appointment take?
Allow 90 to 180 minutes. The time depends on whether imaging and a biopsy are needed on the day.
When will I have my results?
Mammogram and ultrasound findings are discussed the same day. If a biopsy is taken, those results usually follow within 3 to 5 working days.
Can a man book a one-stop clinic?
Yes. Men with breast lumps, pain or nipple changes are welcome and assessed using the same triple-assessment pathway.
What happens if I need surgery?
Mr Ghosh will discuss your options and, where appropriate, present your case to a multidisciplinary team (MDT) — usually within 5 working days — before planning treatment with you.
Is the clinic suitable for routine screening?
Yes. Women aged 40 and over can book a private screening assessment even without symptoms.
