What is gynaecomastia?
- Definition
- Gynaecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in men. It is common and can affect one or both sides. Where it does not settle on its own and causes discomfort or self-consciousness, surgery can reduce the tissue and restore a flatter, firmer chest contour.

Recovery
A compression garment is worn for several weeks to reduce swelling and support the new contour. Most people return to desk work within a week and to full exercise after four to six weeks. Swelling settles over a few months to reveal the final result.
Risks and considerations
Risks include bleeding, infection, bruising, changes in nipple sensation, contour irregularity and asymmetry. Occasionally a small revision is needed. Mr Ghosh discusses these fully so your decision is informed.

What causes gynaecomastia?
Enlarged male breast tissue can be caused by hormonal changes, certain medications, some medical conditions, or have no identifiable cause. Mr Ghosh assesses to rule out other causes before recommending treatment.
Is the surgery discreet?
Yes. Care is provided confidentially. Incisions are planned to be as inconspicuous as possible, often around the edge of the areola.
Is it a day-case procedure?
In most patients, yes. Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and you usually go home the same day.
When can I return to work and the gym?
Most people return to desk work within a week. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are usually avoided for four to six weeks. A compression garment is worn to support healing.
Will the results last?
Results are generally long-lasting, provided weight is stable and any underlying cause is addressed. Significant weight gain or certain medications can affect the outcome.
