What is breast augmentation?
- Definition
- Breast augmentation is surgery to increase the size, shape or fullness of the breasts using implants placed either behind the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. It is also used to restore volume after weight loss or pregnancy, or to improve asymmetry. It is a considered, elective procedure with a recovery period.

How to prepare
- Stop smoking well in advance to support healing.
- Arrange time off work and help at home for the first few days.
- Follow fasting instructions for general anaesthetic.
- Buy a soft, non-wired support bra as advised.
Recovery
Expect soreness and swelling for the first week. Most people return to desk work within one to two weeks and to full exercise at around six weeks. Implants settle into their final position over two to three months. A written recovery plan and follow-up reviews are included.
Risks and considerations
All surgery carries risks, including bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation, capsular contracture (firmness around the implant), implant rupture and the possibility of future revision surgery. Implants are not lifetime devices. Mr Ghosh discusses these risks in detail, in line with Royal College of Surgeons cosmetic-surgery standards.

What implant size is right for me?
There is no single correct size. Mr Ghosh assesses your chest dimensions, tissue and goals to recommend a range that suits your anatomy. Outcomes vary between patients.
Silicone or saline implants?
Most patients in the UK choose cohesive silicone implants for a natural feel. Saline is an alternative. We explain the differences on our choose-your-implant page so your decision is informed.
How long do breast implants last?
Implants are not lifetime devices. Many last well beyond ten years, but some patients will need revision surgery in the future. We discuss this openly.
Will I be able to breastfeed?
Many women can breastfeed after augmentation, though it cannot be guaranteed. The surgical approach is planned to preserve breast function where possible.
When can I return to work and exercise?
Most people return to desk work within one to two weeks. Strenuous exercise is usually avoided for around six weeks. You will receive a detailed recovery plan.
Is there a reflection period before surgery?
Yes. We require a two-week reflection period between consultation and surgery, in line with professional standards, so your decision is fully considered.
