What is a breast ultrasound?
- Definition
- A breast ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of breast tissue. It involves no radiation, making it safe in pregnancy and well suited to younger women whose breast tissue is denser. It is often used alongside a mammogram or to assess a lump found on examination.

Your results and considerations
Where you book a consultant review, your results are explained on the day with a written report. Ultrasound is very safe; its main limitation is that it does not detect all microcalcifications, which is why it is sometimes combined with mammography for a complete assessment.

Frequently asked questions
Is breast ultrasound better than a mammogram?
They are complementary. Ultrasound uses no radiation and is excellent for younger women, dense breasts and assessing a specific lump. Mammography is better at detecting tiny calcifications. Mr Ghosh advises which is right for you.
Does it involve radiation?
No. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not X-rays, so there is no radiation exposure. It is safe in pregnancy.
How long does a breast ultrasound take?
The scan itself usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Where you book a consultant review, the findings are explained the same day.
Will I need a biopsy?
Sometimes. If the scan shows an area that needs sampling, an ultrasound-guided biopsy can often be performed in the same visit.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed for self-paying patients. Insured patients usually require a GP referral.
