What is a mammogram?
- Definition
- A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of breast tissue used to screen for breast cancer and investigate symptoms. Modern 3D tomosynthesis (digital breast tomosynthesis, or DBT) captures multiple thin-layer images, improving detection in dense breast tissue compared with conventional 2D mammography.

How to prepare
- Avoid using talc, deodorant or body lotion on the day, as these can affect the image.
- Wear a two-piece outfit for ease.
- Bring any previous mammograms or reports for comparison.
- Tell us if you are or may be pregnant.
Your results
Where you book a consultant review, Mr Ghosh explains your images on the same day. A written report is provided. If anything needs a closer look, further imaging or a biopsy can often be arranged during the same visit.
Risks and considerations
Mammography involves a small dose of radiation. Compression of the breast can be briefly uncomfortable. No screening test is perfect: a small number of cancers are not visible on mammography, which is why imaging is interpreted alongside examination and, where needed, ultrasound.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3D mammography worth the extra cost?
3D tomosynthesis captures thin-layer images of the breast, which improves cancer detection and reduces false alarms in dense breast tissue compared with standard 2D mammography. For many patients, particularly those with dense breasts, it offers a clearer assessment.
What if I have breast implants?
Mammography is safe with implants. The radiographer uses additional Eklund (implant-displacement) views to image as much breast tissue as possible. Ultrasound may be added for a fuller picture.
How much radiation is involved?
A mammogram uses a low dose of X-ray radiation — comparable to a few weeks of natural background radiation. For women aged 40 and over, the diagnostic benefit outweighs this small exposure.
Can I have a mammogram if I am pregnant?
Mammography is generally avoided during pregnancy. Ultrasound, which uses no radiation, is usually preferred. Please tell us if you are or may be pregnant.
What happens if you find something?
Mr Ghosh explains the findings the same day. If further assessment is needed, an ultrasound or biopsy can often be arranged immediately, and your case discussed at the multidisciplinary team meeting.
Do I need a referral for a private mammogram?
No referral is needed for self-paying patients. Insured patients usually require a GP referral first.
