What is breast reduction?

- Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to create smaller, lighter and better-proportioned breasts. It also lifts and reshapes the breast and repositions the nipple. It is often performed to relieve physical discomfort as well as for appearance.

Recovery and considerations
A support bra is worn for several weeks. Most people return to desk work within two weeks and full activity by six weeks. Risks include scarring, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, altered breastfeeding and, rarely, healing problems. Scars are permanent but usually fade well.

Frequently asked questions
Can breast reduction relieve back and neck pain?
Many patients find that reducing the weight of large breasts eases back, neck and shoulder pain and improves posture and comfort during exercise.
Is breast reduction ever covered by insurance?
Some insurers cover reduction where there is documented physical symptom burden. We can advise on the requirements; otherwise it is available self-pay.
Where are the scars?
Reduction usually leaves a scar around the areola, a vertical scar below it, and often a scar in the breast crease. Scars fade over time but are permanent.
Will I be able to breastfeed?
Breastfeeding may still be possible but cannot be guaranteed, as some milk ducts are altered during surgery.
