Finding a breast change can be frightening. The hardest part is often the wait — for an appointment, for a scan, for results. A one-stop breast clinic is designed to remove as much of that waiting as possible.
What “one-stop” means
A one-stop clinic brings together the three parts of a breast assessment into a single visit. This is called triple assessment:
- A specialist clinical examination
- Imaging — a mammogram, an ultrasound, or both
- A biopsy, only if the examination or imaging suggests one is needed
Because these happen together, most patients leave with a working diagnosis the same day, rather than returning for separate appointments over several weeks.
Why triple assessment matters
No single test is perfect on its own. A lump may feel reassuring but look different on a scan, or vice versa. Combining examination, imaging and — where needed — a biopsy gives a far more reliable picture than any one test alone. It is the standard approach used by NHS breast units and recommended by the Association of Breast Surgery.
What to expect on the day
Allow 90 to 180 minutes. You will meet your consultant, have an examination, and proceed to imaging. If a biopsy is needed, it is usually done under ultrasound guidance and is well tolerated. Imaging findings are explained the same day; biopsy results follow within a few working days.
